A slotted deflection track
A slotted deflection track, also known as a slip track, is an essential component in many steel framing system (SFS) wall assemblies where movement occurs between the primary (structural concrete or steel) and secondary structures (light gauge steel framing). Building movements can be triggered by external forces such as wind, seismic activity, and snow load.
In regions prone to heavy snowfall, building codes may require a deflection track to counter the variations in roof loading that occur with seasonal changes. These slotted deflection tracks come in various specifications to meet different performance needs. For external walls, where cold-formed steel (CFS) studs extend from slab to slab, a slotted deflection track allows the floor or roof above to deflect without transferring axial loads to the wall studs.
At Knudson by Scottsdale, we are dedicated to continuous innovation to address common challenges in light gauge steel framing. One significant challenge is the deflection track, crucial for many non-load bearing and commercial applications. Traditionally, the roll-forming of deflection tracks has been a significant bottleneck due to the repetitive nature of slot punching. However, this challenge has been effectively overcome with our state-of-the-art equipment!
In partnership with our launch customer, US Frame Factory, we have developed an advanced multi-punch deflection track tooling. This innovative tooling is now available worldwide on all new and most existing KFS/KFD Knudson by Scottsdale rollformer series 2025, 1622, 1422, and 1218. This enhancement increases the efficiency of the roll-forming process by nearly 300%, significantly reducing operational bottlenecks.
